چکیده

We have explored, in the general framework of the “young source” scenario, evolutionary models for GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) galaxies and quasars which reproduce the observed counts, redshift and peak frequency distributions of currently available samples. Substantially different cosmological evolution properties are found for the two populations: the quasar luminosity function must evolve strongly up to z ∼ 1, while the data on galaxies may be consistent with no evolution. The models show that GPS sources (mostly quasars) may comprise quite a significant fraction of bright (S > 1 Jy) radio sources at ν ≥ 30GHz if the intrinsic distribution of peak frequencies extends up to ∼ 1000GHz. In any case, however, their fraction decreases rapidly with decreasing flux and their contribution to small scale fluctuations in the frequency range covered by the forthcoming space missions MAP and Planck Surveyor is expected to be minor.

Parsec-scale properties of GHz-Peaked Spectrum sources from 2.3 and 8.6 GHz VLBI surveys

We investigate the sample of 213 GPS sources selected from simultaneous multi-frequency 1– 22 GHz observations obtained with RATAN–600 radio telescope. We use publicly available data to characterize parsec-scale structure of the selected sources. Among them we found 121 core dominated sources, 76 Compact Symmetric Object (CSO) candidates (24 of them are highly probable), 16 sources have complex...

High-frequency predictions for number counts and spectral properties of extragalactic radio sources. New evidence of a break at mm wavelengths in spectra of bright blazar sources⋆

We present models to predict high-frequency counts of extragalactic radio sources using physically grounded recipes to describe the complex spectral behaviour of blazars that dominate the mm-wave counts at bright flux densities. We show that simple power-law spectra are ruled out by high-frequency (ν ≥ 100 GHz) data. These data also strongly constrain models featuring the spectral breaks predic...

Surveys of Extragalactic Sources with Planck

Although the primary goal of ESA’s Planck mission is to produce high resolution maps of the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), its high-sensitivity all-sky surveys of extragalactic sources at 9 frequencies in the range 30–860 GHz will constitute a major aspect of its science products. In particular, Planck surveys will provide key information on ...

Radio spectra of Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum radio sources

Awell defined sample of 72 Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum radio sources is compiled, having turnover frequencies in the range of 0.5 – 10 GHz. Using this sample, the canonical GPS radio spectrum is constructed, which is found to have a constant shape, independent of AGN type, redshift or radio luminosity. A possible deficiency of low turnover frequencies at high redshift is found, which may reflect ...

AND ASTROPHYSICS High Frequency Peakers : I . The Bright Sample

Here we present a sample of sources with convex radio spectra peaking at frequencies above a few GHz. We call these radio sources High Frequency Peakers (HFPs). This sample extends to higher turnover frequencies than the samples of Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources. HFPs are rare due to the strong bias against them caused by their turnover occurring at fre...
